‘rotate and change the perspective’
Since the beginning of rotative studio we reflect and react on contemporary issues and personal fascinations, in parallel to our design practice. It is our way to explore a selected topic from various perspectives, to develop experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to architecture (our architectural and urban practice), and to stimulate a fresh and critical attitude to our role as architects today.
In each rotative research project we focus on both topic as well as method. Findings are accumulated and transferred from one project to another. Dialogues play a central role: always departing a project from a dialogue between the two of us, we extend it by engaging emerging and distinct voices from multidisciplinary groups, and stimulate the involvement of a wider audience than the architectural community.
Urban Transformation as Event (2018)
Urban transformation as Event/rr-dialogues was a one-year experimental interactive research project on both content and method; a continuous expansion of perspectives on the same topic as well as an experimental publishing project.
Method
In december 2017 we invited thirty people from different disciplines and various cities in Europe to participate in a one-year experimental interactive research project that we called ‘rr-dialogues’, with the topic ‘Urban Transformation as Event’.
The participants were asked to react both visually and textually on the two Acts we wrote on the topic – Act I Representation of Intentions and Act II Revision of Intentions – and the first contributions made by us, with the format and approach of their choice.
We created the online interactive platform ‘rr-dialogues.org’ that allowed us to show all the different contributions simultaneously and non-hierarchically: the circle, our logo, as a (digital) round table with all the contributions around.
We established relations between the contributions, e.g. duos (split-screen) and collectives of corresponding or contradicting approaches, content, visualisation (a.o.). No contribution was ever shown alone, but always in relation to another one and/or the Act it reacted on.
Not only was this project about a dialogue between us and the contributors, but also between all of them: an accumulative, collective research.
The project has been published on Hover States and the website of Pavel Kedzich.
Topic
Act I Representation of Intentions | january 2018
The mechanics of perception, communication and persuasion that are needed to help public envisage the intention of an idea, a transformation. The focus of this act is to understand the different ways that are used to simulate a reality that is still not existing – that exists only as idea or plan* – and to imagine the potential impact that the intended transformation might have when realized within its context. *For instance the use of drawing, writing, scale models, 1:1 mock-ups, renderings, building site propaganda and Potemkin villages.
Act II Revision of Intentions | april 2018
Act I focussed on the simulation of intentions - the representation and public announcement of a reality existing only as idea or plan, and on imagining the potential impact of such intentions on the context - Act II, in continuation of Act I, is about the importance/role of context*: what happens when intentions encounter (meet/clash) with the real context? What is the result of this interaction? Context might redefine intentions. *context: an immediate, physical site; values, meanings and local ‘prescriptions’.
